Long Term Car Rental Malaysia: Everything You Need to Know
Long term car rental in Malaysia is a flexible alternative to buying.
More and more people in Malaysia are choosing to rent a car for months rather than buy one. Long-term rental gives you a reliable car without a down payment, loan, insurance renewals or the worry of resale value. But how does it actually work, and is it right for you? This guide covers the questions we hear most often.
What counts as long-term rental?
Generally, any rental of a month or more is considered long-term. At Kuala Lumpur Rent-A-Car, rentals of 30 days or more get our biggest discount, 55% off the daily rate, and the savings start much earlier: 10% for 7 days, 20% for 14 days and 35% for 21 days.
Who is it for?
- Expatriates settling in before buying or importing a car.
- Project-based professionals on assignments of a few months.
- Companies providing cars for new or visiting staff without committing to a multi-year lease.
- Families whose own car is off the road for major repairs.
- Students and returning Malaysians who need a car while they decide what to buy.
What does the price include?
Your monthly price covers the car itself, routine maintenance and servicing, and 24-hour assistance. You pay for fuel and tolls as you drive. Mileage on rentals longer than 30 days includes 4,000 km per month, which is more than enough for most commutes and weekend trips. Any excess is charged at the per-km rate shown on each car's page.
Deposits and documents
A refundable deposit applies, and the amount depends on the car. You will need a valid driving licence and your MyKad or passport. Foreign visitors may need an International Driving Permit depending on their licence. Company rentals may require a few additional business documents.
Servicing and breakdowns
During a long rental, we take care of scheduled servicing. If something goes wrong, call our 24-hour line and we will arrange help, and where needed a replacement car, so you are not left stranded.
Can I change cars?
Your needs can change during a long rental. Family visiting for two weeks? Ask us about switching to an MPV for that period. Moving to a smaller car to save fuel? Talk to us and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Renting vs buying
Buying means a large upfront payment, years of loan instalments, annual insurance and road tax, wear-and-tear repairs and depreciation. For anyone who needs a car for less than a year or two, a long-term rental is usually more flexible and easier to budget for, with one predictable monthly cost.
Example: a Perodua Myvi AV at RM126 a day drops to about RM57 a day on a 30-day package, all with servicing and assistance included.
Questions to ask before you commit
Before signing up for a long rental, ask how payments are scheduled, what happens if you need to end the rental early, how servicing appointments are arranged and whether the price is fixed for the whole period. A good rental company will answer these clearly in writing.
