Hilux or Triton

Both are 2.4-litre diesel double cabs with a six-speed automatic, both seat five and both cost RM360 per day. The difference is in the detail.

The Toyota Hilux Double Cab makes 148 hp with an 80-litre tank and shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive with a rear differential lock — the more rugged setup, and the one to take if you expect mud or loose gravel. The Mitsubishi Triton Double Cab makes 178 hp with Super Select 4WD-II and off-road modes, plus forward collision mitigation and blind spot warning, which makes it noticeably easier to live with in KL traffic.

What the cargo bed changes

An open bed is the reason to book a pickup rather than an SUV. Furniture, bikes, tools, plants and building materials go in without worrying about the interior, and both trucks carry four large bags in the cab as well.

At RM360 a day the Hilux and Triton cost the same as a Honda CR-V V, which makes them the cheapest way to get a load bed and five seats in one booking. Tie-downs and a weather-sensible load plan are your responsibility — we ask that the bed comes back clean and undamaged.

Both trucks are longer than anything else in the fleet, which changes where you can park. Double cabs overhang standard city bays and will not clear the height bar or the ramp radius in some older basement car parks, so street or surface parking is the safer assumption in town. Outside the city that length stops mattering, which is where these two earn their keep.

Diesel, mileage and deposits

Both are diesel, returning around 12 to 12.5 km per litre, and are handed over and returned at the same fuel level. Mileage is unlimited on rentals of three to 30 days; beyond an allowance, excess mileage is RM0.60 per km.

The refundable deposit is RM1,000 on both trucks. Standard damage excess is RM7,000 under our Premium SUV and 4x4 band, which optional excess reduction halves to RM3,500 for RM55 per day.
