The three cars

The Zeekr 009 Luxury is the long-range flagship — 422 hp, rear-wheel drive and up to 702 km on a charge, at RM765 per day. The Xpeng X9 Long Range offers 315 hp and up to 640 km with the most advanced driver assistance of the three, at RM855 per day.

The Denza D9 Advanced is the value pick at RM675 per day, with 313 hp, up to 600 km of range and lounge-style captain seats. All three seat seven, all are automatic, and all carry a RM1,000 refundable deposit.

Charging in and around Kuala Lumpur

Charging is straightforward in the Klang Valley. DC fast chargers are available at most major malls — Mid Valley, Pavilion, Sunway Pyramid, IPC and 1 Utama among them — and typically take a flagship MPV from 20% to 80% in 30 to 45 minutes. Public networks in Malaysia include ChargEV, JomCharge, Gentari and TNB Electron; download the app for whichever network you plan to use before you collect the car.

On the North–South Expressway, DC chargers are installed at a number of the main rest and service areas, which makes an Ipoh or Penang run comfortable in any of the three cars. We hand the car over charged and ask that you return it with a similar level, the same as we do with fuel.

What to know before you book an EV

Range figures are manufacturer claims. In real Klang Valley driving with air conditioning and a full cabin, expect meaningfully less — plan around 70 to 80% of the quoted number and you will not be caught out.

Charging time is the main adjustment. For city use, an overnight AC charge at your hotel or condo is enough. For long drives, build a 30-minute stop into the plan rather than treating it as a delay. If you want a flagship MPV without the charging routine, the Alphard and Vellfire are the petrol equivalents.
