Who this suits

  • Families who want a high driving position and a proper boot
  • Highway trips to Genting, Cameron Highlands or the east coast
  • Drivers who find KL's kerbs, ramps and flood-prone streets easier in something taller
  • Anyone needing seven seats without MPV running costs — the Aruz AV

Compact, mid-size or large

The Perodua Ativa AV is the compact option: a 1.0 turbo that returns around 18 km per litre, small enough for tower basements and the cheapest SUV in the fleet. The Proton X50 Premium steps up to 181 hp and a 14.6-inch screen with Level-2 driver assistance.

Mid-size covers the X70 Premium, HR-V V and CR-V V, all with 437 to 522 litres of boot space. The CR-V V is the only all-wheel-drive petrol SUV we rent and the most capable on wet highland roads. At the top, the BMW X5 xDrive40e is a plug-in hybrid with 340 hp and 650 litres.

The seven-seat SUV

The Perodua Aruz AV is the outlier worth knowing about: a genuine seven-seater at RM180 per day, rear-wheel drive, with 1,100 litres behind the second row when the third is folded.

It is not as comfortable in the third row as an MPV for long journeys, but for school runs, airport trips and weekend outings it costs roughly half what an MPV does and parks far more easily.

Deposits, mileage and discounts

Deposits are RM500 on the Ativa, Aruz, X50, X70, HR-V and CR-V, and RM1,000 on the BMW X5. Excess mileage runs from RM0.40 to RM1.00 per km depending on the model, but mileage is unlimited on any rental from three to 30 days.

Package discounts apply automatically: 10% at seven days, 20% at 14, 35% at 21 and up to 55% at 30 days or more with 4,000 km per month.

Worth knowing about the insurance: the standard damage excess on a Premium SUV is RM7,000, which optional excess reduction halves to RM3,500 for RM55 per day. On the BMW X5 the excess is RM14,000, reduced to RM7,000 for RM100 per day. Those are the same figures you will see in the booking form on each car page.
