Parking Lot Safety Tips: 10 Habits for Walking to Your Car Alone
These parking lot safety tips take seconds to learn and work in any car park.
Whether it is a late night at the office, a dinner in Bangsar or a mall run after work, almost every driver ends up walking through a car park alone at some point. Most of the time nothing happens, and we want to keep it that way. Car parks are quiet, full of hiding places and filled with people focused on their phones, which is exactly why a few simple habits make such a big difference. Here are ten we recommend to every customer.
1. Park smart from the start
Your safety begins when you arrive. Choose a bay near the lift lobby, the entrance or the security booth, under good lighting and within view of CCTV. It might mean walking a little further when you arrive, but you will be grateful when you leave late.
2. Remember exactly where you parked
Wandering around looking for your car makes you look distracted. Snap a photo of the level and bay number before you walk away.
3. Have your keys ready
Take your keys out before you leave the building, not when you reach the car. Fumbling in a bag at the driver's door is the moment you are most exposed.
4. Put the phone away
Scrolling while you walk takes your eyes and attention off your surroundings. Keep your head up, look around and listen.
5. Walk with purpose
Walk confidently and at a steady pace. People who look alert and aware are far less likely to be targeted.
6. Check around and inside the car
As you approach, glance underneath, around the car and at the back seat before you get in. It takes two seconds and becomes second nature.
7. Lock the doors immediately
Once you are inside, lock the doors straight away. Do not sit with the doors unlocked while you check messages, set the navigation or adjust the mirrors.
8. Trust your instincts
If someone is hanging around your car or something feels wrong, do not continue. Walk back to a busy area, go back inside and ask security to escort you. Most malls and office buildings in Kuala Lumpur are happy to help.
9. Travel in pairs when you can
Leaving late with colleagues or friends? Walk to the car park together and wait until everyone is safely inside their cars before driving off.
10. Know who to call
Save the building security number and the national emergency number 999 in your phone. If you are driving one of our cars, our 24-hour assistance line is also there if anything goes wrong with the vehicle.
Good habits do not make you paranoid; they make you prepared. The goal is to get from the door to your driver's seat calmly and quickly.
