Driving in Rain Tips: 18 Ways to Stay Safe in Malaysian Downpours

By KL Rent-A-Car Team

These driving in rain tips will help you handle sudden Malaysian downpours safely.

Rain in Malaysia rarely arrives gently. A clear afternoon can turn into a torrential downpour within minutes, and during the northeast monsoon from around November to March, the east coast and parts of the peninsula see days of heavy rain. Wet roads, poor visibility and sudden flash floods all raise the risk of accidents. The golden rule is simple: focus more, drive slower. Here are eighteen tips to help.

Before you drive

1. Check your wipers. Streaky or squeaky blades should be replaced before the rainy season.

2. Check your tyres. Good tread depth is what channels water away and keeps you gripping the road.

3. Test all lights. Headlights, brake lights and indicators must work so others can see you.

4. Check the weather. The MetMalaysia app gives warnings for heavy rain, thunderstorms and floods.

5. Plan your route. Avoid low-lying roads known to flood, and allow extra time.

On the road

6. Turn on your headlights. Use low beam whenever it rains, day or night.

7. Slow down. Reduce your speed well below the limit when the road is wet.

8. Double your following distance. Stopping distances can more than double on wet tarmac.

9. Avoid sudden moves. Brake, steer and accelerate gently to keep the tyres gripping.

10. Beware of aquaplaning. If the steering suddenly feels light, ease off the accelerator and keep the wheel straight until the tyres regain grip. Do not brake hard.

11. Stay in the middle lanes. Water collects at the edges of the road.

12. Watch out for motorcyclists. Many will stop under flyovers to put on raincoats, and others may be hard to see.

13. Do not use hazard lights while moving. They confuse other drivers; keep them for when you are stopped.

14. Keep the windows clear. Use the demister and air-conditioning to stop the glass fogging up.

When conditions get worse

15. Never drive through flood water. Just 30cm of moving water can float a car, and you cannot see how deep it is or whether the road beneath has collapsed.

16. Pull over safely if you cannot see. Find a safe spot such as a petrol station or R&R, not the emergency lane under a flyover.

17. Watch for fallen trees and debris. Strong winds during storms can bring down branches, especially on tree-lined roads.

18. Test your brakes after deep water. If you have driven through standing water, press the brake gently a few times to dry the pads.

If in doubt, wait it out. Most tropical downpours pass within an hour, and arriving a little late is always better than not arriving at all.

Keep an emergency kit in the car

A small kit makes rainy breakdowns far less stressful: a torch, a reflective triangle, a raincoat or umbrella, a phone power bank and a towel. If you rent, ask what is included and save the 24-hour assistance number in your phone before you set off.
