By KL Rent-A-Car Team

Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, is the gateway to some of Borneo's greatest adventures. Within an hour or two you can be snorkelling off tropical islands, walking through mountain forests or watching one of the finest sunsets in Asia. If you are wondering which places to visit in Kota Kinabalu deserve a spot on your itinerary, start with this list.

10 places to visit in Kota Kinabalu and nearby

1. Tunku Abdul Rahman Park

Five islands just off the coast, with Manukan and Sapi the most popular for snorkelling and beach picnics. Our Sapi and Manukan day trip guide covers boats, fees and what to pack.

2. Kinabalu Park and Mount Kinabalu

A UNESCO World Heritage Site around two hours away, with botanical gardens and short forest trails even if you are not climbing.

3. Kundasang and Desa Dairy Farm

Cool highland air, cattle grazing beneath the mountain and some of the best views in Sabah.

4. Filipino Market and Night Market

Fresh seafood grilled to order, handicrafts and lively evening atmosphere on the waterfront.

5. Tanjung Aru Beach

The city's favourite sunset beach, with food stalls and space for an evening stroll.

6. Signal Hill Observatory

A short drive up the hill gives you a panoramic view over the city and islands.

7. City Mosque (Masjid Bandaraya)

Often called the floating mosque, it sits on a lagoon and is beautiful at dusk.

8. Mari Mari Cultural Village

Learn about Sabah's indigenous communities through traditional houses, crafts and food.

9. Gaya Street Sunday Market

Every Sunday morning the street fills with stalls selling everything from orchids to local snacks.

10. Tip of Borneo, Kudat

A scenic drive north to the northernmost point of Borneo, where two seas meet. For more island ideas, see our guide to the best Sabah islands.

Kota Kinabalu rewards early risers: island boats, the Sunday market and Kinabalu's clear morning views all happen before 10am.

Getting around Kota Kinabalu

Ride-hailing works within the city, but day trips to Kundasang, Kudat or the Klias wetlands are much easier with your own car. Roads are generally good, though mountain stretches can be winding and misty, so allow extra time and avoid driving in heavy rain after dark.

Suggested three-day itinerary

Spend day one in the city: Signal Hill in the morning, the City Mosque in the afternoon and seafood at the Filipino Market at night. On day two, catch an early boat to Manukan and Sapi and return for sunset at Tanjung Aru. On day three, drive to Kinabalu Park and Kundasang, stopping at roadside stalls for highland vegetables and fruit.
