10 Kelantan Food Favourites Every Food Lover Must Try on a Road Trip
Kelantan, in Malaysia's northeast, has one of the most distinctive food cultures in the country, with sweeter flavours, herbs and dishes found nowhere else. If you are driving to Kota Bharu, make room in your itinerary for eating. Here are ten Kelantan food favourites to try.
10 Kelantan dishes to try
1. Nasi kerabu
Blue rice coloured with butterfly pea flowers, served with herbs, fish, coconut and sambal.
2. Nasi dagang
Rice steamed with coconut milk and fenugreek, eaten with fish curry, especially at breakfast.
3. Nasi tumpang
Layers of rice and dishes wrapped in a cone of banana leaf, perfect for the road.
4. Laksam
Thick rolled rice noodles in a rich fish and coconut gravy.
5. Ayam percik
Chicken grilled over charcoal and basted with a spiced coconut sauce.
6. Solok lada
Green chillies stuffed with fish and coconut, steamed in coconut milk.
7. Nasi berlauk
Rice with a choice of local dishes, a classic Kelantanese lunch.
8. Akok
A sweet, caramelised egg and coconut cake.
9. Nekbat
Soft egg dumplings soaked in sugar syrup.
10. Budu with ulam
Fermented anchovy sauce served with fresh herbs and rice, a true local taste.
Do as the locals do: breakfast at the market, lunch at a nasi berlauk stall and sweet kuih with teh tarik in the afternoon.
Where to eat in Kota Bharu
Pasar Siti Khadijah is the heart of the city's food scene, with stalls run largely by women traders. In the evening, explore the night market near the town centre for grilled food and snacks.
Driving to Kelantan
From KL, the drive to Kota Bharu takes around seven to eight hours via the Central Spine Road or the east coast route. Break the journey in Kuala Lipis, Gua Musang or Kuala Terengganu, where you can detour to the hidden gems in Terengganu. A comfortable car such as the Proton X70 Premium makes the distance far easier, and our road trip guide has more east coast ideas.
Food etiquette and tips
Many Kelantanese dishes are eaten with the right hand, and stalls often display dishes so you can point and choose. Portions are generous and prices are friendly, so it is easy to try several dishes in one sitting. Friday mornings are quieter as many businesses close for prayers, and some stalls also close on Fridays, so plan your food crawl for other days. Bring cash, as smaller stalls may not accept cards, and do not be shy to ask what each dish is; traders are usually happy to explain.
