Car Rental Insurance Malaysia: CDW, LDW and Excess Explained
What CDW, LDW and excess mean, how much you could pay after damage and how the daily excess-reduction add-on cuts it in half.
Understanding car rental insurance Malaysia renters actually receive is one of the best ways to avoid surprises at the counter. Terms such as CDW, LDW and excess sound technical, but the idea is simple: the rental price includes basic cover, and you remain responsible for a fixed amount, called the excess, if the car is damaged. This guide explains how it works at Kuala Lumpur Rent-A-Car so you can choose with confidence.
Always read the full rental terms before you pay, as details can differ between companies and between cars.
What car rental insurance Malaysia visitors should expect
Most reputable rental companies include basic insurance and road documentation in the rate. That cover protects you from paying the full repair bill, but it comes with an excess. At Kuala Lumpur Rent-A-Car, the standard excess is RM3,500 for Economy cars (RM4,000 for SUVs and MPVs), RM6,500 for Premium cars (RM7,000 for SUVs, MPVs and 4x4s) and RM14,000 for Luxury cars. The exact rules are on our Terms & Conditions page.
How the excess reduction add-on works
The add-on halves the excess for a daily fee: RM20 to RM25 per day for Economy, RM50 to RM55 for Premium and RM100 for Luxury. For a four-day trip in a Perodua Myvi, that is a small cost for a much lower maximum bill if something goes wrong. If the repair cost is lower than your excess, you pay only the actual repair cost.

Think of the excess as a cap: it does not mean you will pay that amount, only that you will never pay more than it for covered damage.
Example: when does the excess apply?
Imagine a small scrape in a car park. If the repair is estimated at RM800, you pay RM800, not the full excess. If a serious accident causes RM12,000 of damage to an Economy hatchback, you would pay up to the excess amount (reduced if you took the add-on), and cover would take care of the rest, provided the damage is not due to negligence.
Things that are not covered
- Damage caused by negligence or breaking the rental terms.
- Losses outside the conditions listed in the terms.
- Traffic summonses, tolls and fuel, which are the renter's responsibility.

What to do if something happens

Car Rental Insurance Malaysia: FAQ
Is insurance included in the rental price?
Basic cover is included, with a stated excess for each car class. You can reduce that excess with the daily add-on.
Is the excess the same as the deposit?
No. The deposit is held and refunded after the rental if there are no claims, while the excess is the maximum you pay toward covered damage.
Should I take the add-on?
If you want a lower maximum bill and more peace of mind, especially on longer or busier drives, the add-on is a sensible option.
